While Dar is fascinated by Zuraya, an animal trainer struggling against a dark curse, Baha tries again to have his revenge on Dar's tiger friend, Ruh.

Dar takes Tao on another trip to the Downs. There, Dar encounters a woman to whom he feels a strange attraction. She is Zuraya, a beautiful woman with a mysterious curse that dooms her to hunt the night alone until she causes the death of The Dark One in the shadows. As an animal trainer traveling with a circus troupe, she, like Dar, shares a special bond with the animals. The Slayer, a wolf she trains, stands by her at all times, ready to inflict the extreme punishment Zuraya is fated to perform. Despite the obvious attraction, Zuraya leaves Dar somewhat abruptly.

In a true test of his love for Kyra, Dar finds himself attracted to Zuraya, a beautiful animal trainer cursed with loneliness by the Ancient One.
